Yanagawa "Kawakudari" (going downstream) is a punt tour of the waterways in Yanagawa ramified across the city like a mesh including the old castle's moat.

The wide and narrow waterways' network spans a total length of about 470km forming a unique landscape of the water district called "Suigo". This atmospheric beauty inspired a great poet Kitahara Hakushu born and raised in Yanagawa, and the landscape has been adored by many later literati and artists following Hakushu.

This precious historic heritage was formed in the course of people living and prospering together with water. Preventing inland flood by temporarily storing rain water during stormy seasons and supplying water for agricultural use or in case of fire fighting, the waterways are deeply connected to people's daily life in Yanagawa to this day.

Our punt tours start from Shogetsu and end at Okinohata area (including Ohana in option), about 4.5km in distance, passing through the old castle's water gate and calmly winding downstream for fulfilling 70 minutes.

The tour runs every 30 minutes.

Destinations

Shogetsu (start) - Castle's Water Gate - Inner Moat - Ohana - Okihohata (end)
Duration: about 70 minutes

The course is one way only. When you get off the boat, our free shuttle bus will be available at 14:30/15:30/16:30 from our "Rokkyu" restaurant (near end of course) back to Nishitetsu Yanagawa station or Shogetsu (start of course). You can also take a taxi (about ¥1200) or regular bus (¥200/person) from the gate of "Ohana".

Access

Nishitetsu Train

Take a limited express train of Tenjin-Omuta Line and get off at Nishitetsu Yanagawa. It takes about 45 minutes from Fukuoka (Tenjin), 15 minutes from Nishitetsu Kurume and 15 minutes from Omuta. Frequency is every 30 minutes during the daytime.
After you get off at Nishitetsu Yanagawa, please visit our information counter located in the station and we will guide you to our place. Our free shuttle bus from the station is available during the daytime. Our place is located within 5 minute walk from the station.

JR Train

Kyushu Shinkansen Line:

Take Tsubame train and get off at Chikugo-Funagoya. It takes about 27 minutes from Hakata (Fukuoka), 7 minutes from Kurume, 23 minutes from Kumamoto and 94 minutes from Kagoshima (via Kumamto). Frequency is about every 1 hour during the daytime.
Regular bus is available from JR Chikugo-Funagoya station to Nishitetsu Yanagawa station. Taxi is also available. It takes about 20 minutes (9km) by car from the station to our place.

Kagoshima Line:

Take a rapid train and get off at Setaka. It takes about 52 minutes from Hakata (Fukuoka), 16 minutes from Kurume and 10 minutes from Omuta. Frequency is about every 20-40 minutes during the daytime.
Regular bus is available from JR Setaka station to Nishitetsu Yanagawa station. Taxi is also available. It takes about 15 minutes (7km) by car from the station to our place.

Airport

Fukuoka Airport:

Subway/taxi/bus to Nishitetsu Tenjin station or JR Hakata station available. Then, take Nishitetsu train or JR train as above.
Airport limousine bus to Nishitetsu Kurume station available. Then, take Nishitetsu train as above.
It takes about 75 minutes (68 km) by car via Highway from the airport to our place.

Ariake-Saga Airport:

Airport limousine taxi to Yanagawa area and regular taxi available.
It takes about 30 minutes (18 km) by car from the airport to our place.

Highway

Exit at Miyama-Yanagawa of Kyushu Highway, from where it takes about 20 minutes (10km) to our place.
From Nagasaki, exit at Saga-Yamato of Nagasaki Highway, from where it takes about 50 minutes (25km).
